Short-Term Temporary Sign Registration

Guidelines for Submission of Registration Forms for Short-Term Temporary Signs

The Sterling Heights City Council has adopted amendments to the City of Sterling Heights Sign Regulations.

All temporary signs, including political signs, must still be registered through the City Clerk’s Office if the signs are being placed on any commercial property or any vacant property in the City.  However, the process has been streamlined so that the registration may be submitted through an online portal found at the following link:

A “hard copy” registration form is also available from the City Clerk’s Office and may be used instead of the online form if preferred.

The new signage limits are as follows:

Residential property: 9 sq. ft. of total temporary signage, no sign larger than 3 sq. ft.                              Registration is not required.

Vacant Residential property: 9 sq. ft. of total temporary signage, no sign larger than 3 sq. ft.                   Registration is required.

Commercial property: 40 sq. ft. of total temporary signage, no sign larger than 12 sq. ft.                         Registration is required.

Note: The new regulations do not limit the number of temporary signs, only the total square footage on each property.

The effective date of the changes to the Sign Regulations is August 3, 2016.  Until that date, the City Clerk will accept both the old and new forms (including the online registration) for all new temporary sign registrations.    After that date, only the new form (online or hard copy submission) will be accepted.
